My Reviewer Policy

I prefer to do my own hunting for fiction to review. Very occasionally I'll review a novel published on a small-scale (self-published, e-pub, or small press) that gets emailed to me as a PDF copy.  If you email me your novel, I won't email you back unless I review it -- which is very unlikely because I'm so appallingly pressed for time.  Please don't pester me with follow-up emails because I won't answer. Again, it's unlikely that I'll review something I'm sent -- but I might, and you've got nothing to lose.   If I review your novel, I'll always email you a link to my review. Also, you can rest easy on the issue of pirated ebooks.  Whether I review your book or not, I won't share the copy with anyone else because I wouldn't want to cut into any author's potential sales.

What do I read:

  • paper books, ebooks, traditionally published fiction, and self-published fiction
  • I prefer novels but I'm willing to review short-story collections and stand-alone short-stories
  • I've mostly done m/m (homoerotic) fiction and some lesbian fiction in all genres.
  • I prefer urban fantasy, steam-punk, and unusual stuff to Tolkien-esque epic fantasy.
  • I prefer to focus on small-scale publishing: ebooks, small-press, and self-published.

What do I like? Character-driven stories with a solid plot.  Here is what I especially enjoy:

  • adventure and action
  • historical fiction (from any era and country)
  • humor (but I'm less fond of parody and satire)
  • military stories
  • mysteries of all types
  • romance (mostly m/m and f/f)
  • romantic and sexual tension
  • urban fantasy and steampunk

What am I willing to tolerate?

  • Ladylike homoerotic fiction .
  • Erotica (but it had better have a believable plot or I'm going to get bored and annoyed)
  • Vampire / Werewolf stories (I've read so many that I'm approaching burn-out).

What do I dislike?

  • scenes of nonconsensual sex (it had better be integral to your story)
  • experimental fiction (e.g., Finnegans Wake)
  • ultra-violent horror fiction.  This type of fiction I'll pass on reviewing.

What if I don't like your book? You'll get an honest review that points out what I consider to be your book's flaws.  One thing I promise not to do:  I won't rip your book to shreds and make fun of it. If I've got problems with it, I'll take it seriously enough to point out valid reasons for my concerns. I'll also try to point out the good stuff.
